We understand that practical work can be one of the hardest parts of preparing for a science qualification when you are not attending a traditional school or college. That's why our sessions focus on giving candidates the opportunity to work with laboratory equipment and practise essential experimental techniques in a supportive environment.

Our tutors explain each activity clearly, demonstrate the correct techniques and then give candidates the opportunity to carry out practical work themselves. You'll also have plenty of time to ask questions and receive feedback.

What happens during the sessions?

Each session is structured to help you understand the practical work and gradually become more confident carrying it out yourself.

Laboratory equipment, materials and the practical environment are checked before the session begins.
Tutors introduce the relevant health and safety procedures and explain how equipment should be used.
Practical experiments are demonstrated clearly, with explanations of the techniques involved.
Candidates then carry out practical activities themselves under appropriate supervision.
Tutors provide guidance and feedback throughout the session and answer questions as they arise.
Candidates have the opportunity to demonstrate the practical skills they have developed and identify areas where they may need further practice.
